How to find a family doctor accepting new patients
No official registry in the US, Canada or the UK publishes whether a practice is taking new patients. Registries record who is licensed or registered and where they practise. Availability changes week to week, so it has to come from the practice.
Steps that work
- Start with practices close to home: open your state, province or nation, then your city.
- Call or check the practice website and ask directly whether they accept new patients, and whether they take your insurance or coverage.
- In Canada, register with your provincial attachment list (for example Health Care Connect in Ontario or the Health Connect Registry in British Columbia) while you search.
- In England, you can register with a GP practice through the NHS website or the NHS App. Practices can only refuse in limited circumstances.
- In the US, use your insurer's in-network directory alongside a registry search.

When a practice tells us it is accepting new patients, we show that with the date it was last reported. Practices can update their listing for free.
