What is an NPI number?

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number issued by the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to health care providers. HIPAA requires it on standard electronic health transactions such as insurance claims.

CMS publishes every NPI record in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) as public data. Our US listings come from that file, filtered to the Family Medicine (207Q00000X) and General Practice (208D00000X) taxonomy codes.

An NPI shows that a provider has enumerated with CMS. It is not a licence and does not confirm board certification. Check those with the state medical board.
